The Art of Judo
What is Judo?
JUDO, the way of adaptability, is a martial arts system developed by Jigoro Kano based on techniques from Tenjin Shinyo-ryu, Kito-ryu, and Yoshin-ryu styles of Jujutsu. The art of judo emphasizes physical and mental development through intense, long-term training. The motto of judo, coined by Kano, is
Efficient Use of Energy, Mutual Welfare and Benefit
Judo training includes two major aspects, randori and kata. Randori (free practice) involves actual contest conditions. It includes nage-waza (throwing) and katame-waza (grappling) such as osaekomi-waza (pins), shime-waza (chokes), and kansetsu-waza (joint locks). Kata, which literally means "form", is a set of pre-arranged exercises, including throws, pins, joint locks, striking, and weapons defense. At the Japanese Martial Arts Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, judo is taught both as a competitive sport and a lifetime personal development pursuit.
